Ruby Falls is an underground waterfall located inside Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga Tennessee. It is a world famous underground waterfall and system of caverns. It is the tallest and deepest waterfall open to the public in the United States. The entrance to the caverns is located on scenic highway on the way up Lookout Mountain.

To access the waterfall you descend 260 feet in a glass front elevator to the caverns. From there you are taken by a tour guide though the caverns to the waterfall. The caverns are consistently about 60 degrees, so you may want to dress accordingly.

The caves which are approximately 200 million years old were discovered by  Leo Lambert by accident as he was looking for Lookout Mountain Caverns. Along the path to the falls are multiple geological formations including stalagmites and stalactites.

The caverns and waterfall were opened to the public in 1929. The walk to the waterfall from the elevator may be challenging for some visitors due to uneven cave floors and slick conditions due to humidity. There are some areas with low clearances but the tour guides are quite helpful and with point our areas to be more cautious.

As you can see from the photograph, there is lighting that has been added to the falls and the rest of the cave. In fact our tour guide said it took a specialized crew to install over 200 thousand dollars worth of light effects which are on a timer providing an everchanging visual.
